Visualizing IoT data using Power BI

Extracting insights from multiple data sources is a new goal for manufacturers. Industrial IoT (IIoT) data is the basis for new solutions, with the potential for giving manufacturers a competitive edge over their competitors.

Gathering data from sensors and storing it in the cloud is just one part of IoT. The other significant part is generating valuable insights from this data, help people understand their business in a much better way. Using Power BI to get deep insights on this data can help you make intelligent decisions to improve your existing process and productivity.

What is Power BI?

Power BI is a business analytics solution that lets you visualize your data and share insights across your organization or embed them in your app or website. Power BI gives you freedom to connect with multiple data sources across different Cloud Platforms. It comes with many visualization graphs which makes it easier to display different kind of data on the dashboard.

There are two variants of Power BI including Power BI Desktop and Power BI Service.

  • Power BI Desktop is an on-premises version of Power BI, which allows users to build reports, queries, and data connections. Power BI Desktop can be installed on a local machine. You can connect to any data source and import the required tables from the selected data source to Power BI Desktop. After importing data into Power BI, you can create visuals based on that data.
  • Power BI Service also known as Power BI Online is a business intelligence service that hosts reports in the cloud.

Why use Power BI?

Power BI puts business intelligence creation into the hands of analysts who can extract source data, create a dataset, transform or manipulate the data, visualize the data and publish the resulting reports and dashboards. The underlying Power BI technology is an in-memory analytics engine which improves query performance on large data sets.

How PROLIM is using Power BI?

At Prolim, we are building multiple IoT Solutions for our client and on our internal products where data is collected from multiple sources (process data, operational data, manual entry) and sensors and stored in data warehouse like Amazon Redshift or Amazon RDS. Power BI can be integrated with Cloud services to generate real-time insights into your business. Power BI can be used to view the real-time business data in an easy to understand and highly visualized manner. Power BI also allows for batch analysis and creating a dashboard for each of our solution to help understand the summarized analysis of the process or asset we are monitoring. Power Bi also supports the feature of embedding the dashboard in your custom built application.
